"Being able to see all of the small details is what makes you able to accurately obtain a great likeness. If you cannot see the small things that make up the individual, you then have to fake it. This makes it “close” to the person, but that is not good enough. A good portrait must be spot on!" The Importance of good Photo Reference
Lighting:
We're looking for enough light to create contrast and define the face, it can't be too strong or too soft – indirect or diffused light usually produces a good result, we want to avoid lights shining head-on and shadows that don't belong there!
Pose:
For a classical portrait you need a classical pose! Although selfies and candid shots can be fun pics, it won't have the same appeal when pencil meets paper!
3/4 pose is a classical standard where the subject is turned slightly away from the camera - not head on, and not sideways!
Clarity:
This one is obvious. The more details in the reference, the more details in the finished artwork.
The smaller the image, the less clarity you have. A great way to 'test' the clarity of your photo: choose an eye and zoom in all the way – eyes are the most detail-heavy part of your portrait, so if you can still see all the details you might just have a good reference!
